I first discovered this show in the second episode of the current series and I must admit this show is very entertaining, although cooking seems to be secondary to the drama. It is “reality TV”, but the ineptitude almost seems to have been planned.
Last night’s episode had me in stitches when a 26 and a 30 year old could not figure out how a steam iron works, and the other 26 year old had trouble with a vacumn. These are things most folks know about at half that age and I wonder what circumstances led these three to reach that age without such basic knowledge.
Although I am far from an experienced cook, throughout the season it has occurred to me that the contestants seem to have been chosen for their lack of ability with just a few exceptions. From day one it seemed to me that few had much skill, and even then I would be reluctant to entrust a restaurant to them.
With the exception of Rock, the men from day one appeared to be a bunch of bungling noobs who repeated the same mistakes over and over. Unfortunately Rock has an attitude problem wich just makes me want to see him lose.
The women on the other hand seem to have been chosen for how catty they can be. This made for seriously funny entertainment when a bunch of chefs who needed to communicate decided to all give each other the silent treatment. They seem to have overcome this and for the most part have been outperfoming the men.
Unfortunately Julia, the most likable person of the twelve contestants was eliminated. Her skill was very high, but lack of knowledge on gourmet food pretty much made me wonder how she could run a five star restaurant. I look forward to seeing her back in competition after culinary school.
That narrows it down to three and I am expecting Jen to win.
