This
fun project shows how to make chocolate skull pops. Although popular for Halloween,
this is also an edible alternative to sugar skulls for Dias de Los Muertos
(Day of the Dead). I have included a few decorating methods here, but of course
they may be mixed and matched as well as other methods used. As usual, the
main limitation here is your own creativity.
Many of the items you may need can be ordered directly from this page for your convenience.
PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required.
Chocolate
I prefer to use chocolate wafers designed for home molding chocolate.
My preferred brand is Merckens which works well with all chocolate molding
projects, is available in a wide selection of colors, and tastes great.
Melting Chocolate
Either melting method may be used, but I find the double boiler works best
for filling the mold. The small amounts of colored chocolate are more easily
melted in a microwave.
Double Boiler - See Double Boiler Usage Instructions.
A microwave may also be used but care must be taken not to overheat the chocolate.
The following chocolate making supplies and other materials were used to make this project. Clicking on the item name will bring you to that item's page with a full description and ordering information.
Step
1
The mold is used without modifications.
Step
2
The mold cavities are filled with white chocolate then rapped against the
counter to dislodge any trapped air. Insert the lolly sticks and roll them
for better adhesion.
Note - These may also be made without lolly sticks.
Step
3
Allow to harden then place in a freezer until they demold easily.
Step
4
Non-Pareils: These are a colorful and tasty way to decorate these. Simply
melt some white chocolate and apply to the area desired (such as the eye sockets
shown here). Immediately sprinkle with non-pareils. This should be done in
a pan so you can recover any excess for use on the next one. Allow to harden.
Step
5
Non-pareils should be used one color at a time to prevent the colors from
mixing.
Step
6
Add as much or as few as desired.
Step
7
Another method for decorating these is to use a star tube in a deluxe squeeze
bottle or decorating bag. This works best with royal icing, but colored chocolate
may be used. For this article I used colored chocolate, but as you can see
it is harder to work with than icing.
Step
8
Decorate as desired.
Step
9
Several finished skull pops. There are many possible ways to decorate these.
