I
was fiddling around with some sculpting chocolate while thinking about Valentine's
day projects and came up with this. It is cute in a goofy sort of way and
would likely do best as a cake topper. Alternatively it could be placed in
the center of a large chocolate heart box bottom and filled around with candies
for use as a centerpiece.
PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required. Once the sculpting chocolate has been made, this is a very safe project for the entire family as it requires no heat or sharp tools.
Sculpting Chocolate
If you are not familiar with sculpting chocolate, please refer to
my Making Sculpting Chocolate article before
continuing.
Colors
I used red chocolate and white chocolate here. For best results, use colored
chocolate. If you need a different color, a custom color blending chart is
available here if needed. Sometimes
powdered food color is handy for intensifying the colors and some was added
to the red to deepen the color.
The following chocolate making supplies and other materials were used to make this project. Clicking on the item name will bring you to that item's page with a full description and ordering information.
Step
1
The sculpting chocolate needs to be prepared in advance and stored in an airtight
bag.
Step
2
The prepared sculpting chocolate hardens over time so before beginning I like
to get a jump start on the kneading by rolling the sculpting chocolate with
a rolling pin while still in the plastic bag. If you don't have a rolling
pin a glass jar may be used.
Step
3
Remove the sculpting chocolate from the bag and knead until fairly soft and
pliable.
Step
4
To finish the kneading process I like to roll the sculpting chocolate on my
counter several times. Roll it out, fold in half, roll again. Repeat this
until the chocolate is quite soft and workable.
Step
5
Roll out to approximately 3/8 inch (9 mm.) thickness. Break off about 6 inches
and set it aside.
Step
6
Roll out a ball of chocolate approximately 1 1/2 inches (38 mm.) in diameter.
Step
7
Flatten it into a disc approximately 3/8 inch (9 mm.) thick.
Step
8
Use your fingers to shape the disc into a heart shape.
