This
fun Christmas chocolate project looks difficult to make or expensive to buy,
yet requires only one chocolate mold, several chocolate colors, and a few
paintbrushes. It is based almost entirely on mold painting although there
is some assembly involved as well. These make great gifts, party favors, or
even mini centerpieces.
This project has a lot of mold painting so a quick painting plan was written up to prevent missing an area which would require heating that color up again. It is always a smart idea to plan your complex mold painting before starting. The paint plan for this mold was as follows:
Many of the items you may need can be ordered directly from this page for your convenience.
PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required.
Chocolate
I prefer to use chocolate wafers designed for home molding chocolate.
My preferred brand is Merckens which works well with all chocolate molding
projects, is available in a wide selection of colors, and tastes great.
Melting Chocolate
For a small project like this either melting method may be used, but for the
painted areas which require only small quantities a microwave is more practical.
Double Boiler - See Double Boiler Usage Instructions.
A microwave may also be used but care must be taken not to overheat the chocolate.
The following chocolate making supplies and other materials were used to make this project. Clicking on the item name will bring you to that item's page with a full description and ordering information.

| 1. The mold is used with no modifications, however it does not sit flat and will need support to hold it level. | 2. Paint the white areas first. Allow each color to harden before painting any adjacent areas. |

| 3. Before finishing with each color, hold the mold up to a light and inspect for thin spots that require touch up. | 4. I used peach for the face area. For an ethnic version most skin tones may be attained by mixing peach with milk chocolate or using straight milk chocolate for the skin area. The amount of milk chocolate needed would be proportionate to darkness of the skin tone desired. |

| 5. Red is brushed on next. | 6. Green is painted on the Reindeer bow and the remainder is used to fill the gift box cavity. |

| 7. Some milk chocolate is melted and poured into the reindeer cavity. No painting is done with this color. | 8. Melt some dark chocolate and fill Santa and the base. |
