Hosting Children's
Chocolate Making Parties
Part I Hints And Tips

By Bob Sherman

This series of articles is intended for those who wish to host children's parties on a commercial basis. The information presented here is taken from my experience hosting children's parties at our store. Note that I do only top quality parties tailored to each customer. Although I charge a premium price, I provide great value in both entertainment and goody bags.

This concept is versatile and may be adapted as needed for your store, party business, or even entertaining on location (much the way a clown or magician might be hired to perform).

The Personal Touch

I would love to have my weekends off, but most of my party bookings are from clients who have attended another party here. Word of mouth is everything in the party business so I take a direct hand in every party. No one cares about your business as much as you do, no matter how good an employee they are so at the very least supervise employees closely during parties.

I do not run a party mill with a bored part time employee running each party - customers could have their party at the local bowling alley or skating rink if they want that. I run each party personally and go out of my way to ensure that all children have a great time. If this means going above and beyond what the contract calls for - so be it.

Persona

One way to set yourself above the competition is to develop a persona the kids can relate to. You may consider yourself a host / hostess but in reality you are an entertainer and I consider every party I host to be a performance. This alone may set you several steps above the competition if you do it well.

My alter ego for parties is Chef Bob (real original huh). I'm 6'2" 250 pounds so I come off big and loud no matter how I try - so that is part of my stage persona. Throw in a chef's coat, big goofy chef hat, some clowning around, a few magic illusions, and and my party room transforms into a magical place for kids -where anything might happen and often does.

While this persona works well for me, you should develop one that suits your strengths and temperament.
