This
is a very simple Spring or Easter project that is fun to make. The finished
nests are colorful and taste great. The basis for the nests are a haystack
mixture, but with extra toasted coconut to make them more "twiggy"
looking.
Many of the items you may need can be ordered directly from this page for your convenience.
PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required.
Chocolate
I prefer to use chocolate wafers designed for home molding chocolate.
My preferred brand is Merckens which works well with all chocolate molding
projects, is available in a wide selection of colors, and tastes great.
Melting Chocolate
Either melting method may be used, but I find the double boiler works best
for this.

A microwave may also be used but care must be taken not to overheat the chocolate.

The chocolate mold is used without modification.
Step

You will need several jelly beans for each chocolate nest.

Melt the chocolate, then add toasted coconut.
Step

Stir well and if necessary add more toasted coconut until the mix looks like
twigs or grass.
Step

Drop a spoonful into each mold cavity and make a depression in the center
with your finger.
Note: A loose clump is more desirable here. We are using the mold only for the basic shape - do not try to pack the mold

Set several jelly beans into each chocolate nest.

Allow the nests to cool.
Step

Place the mold in your freezer until they de mold easily - approximately 7
minutes.

Nice packaging makes these chocolate nests into a wonderful gift.

Individual nests can also be boxed or bagged using spring shred fill.
