Molded Cinnamon Dough Ornaments Project

By Bob Sherman

This project shows how to make traditional cinnamon dough ornaments in chocolate molds. Although these are not edible, they are made from food so it will not ruin your molds for chocolate making. These throw a nice fragrance and although this article deals with making holiday ornaments and package toppers, these could be made in other themes as air fresheners. Using a matching ornament as a package topper for chocolates made in this mold is one gift possibility.

Although not shown here, these can be embellished with homespun, jute, or ribbon for hang loops and bows.

PLEASE NOTE!! - Although this is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required for the baking portion.

Supplies And Materials

The following chocolate making supplies and other materials were used to make this project. Clicking on the item name will bring you to that item's page with a full description and ordering information.

Recipe

Mix the following to form a smooth dough:

The optional spices only add fragrance so these may be omitted if you prefer.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1
After mixing the dough, put it in plastic to prevent drying out.

Step 2
Spray some shortening on a paper towel and wipe it into each mold cavity.

Tip - Wiping your fingertips with this will keep the dough from sticking to your hands when working with it.

Step 3
Place a blob of dough into the center of the mold cavity.

Step 4
Start at the center and press the dough flat and to the edges.

Place the mold in your freezer overnight. The piece must freeze solid or they will break when de molding.

Step 5
Demold the ornaments onto a baking sheet.

Allow them to warm to room temperature.

Step 6
Use an object to make the hang loop hole. I used a bamboo skewer here. Straws are also popular for this step.

Step 7
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Bake for about 20 minute, until completely dry.
