Bear With Heart Lolly
Chocolate Making Project

By Bob Sherman

This simple project is fast and fun, yet makes great gifts for Valentine's Day or Mother's day. They make great gifts for teddy bear lovers as well. The simplicity of this also makes it a perfect beginner project.

Most of the items you may need can be ordered directly from this page for your convenience.

PLEASE NOTE!! - Although chocolate making is relatively safe for the entire family to participate, adult supervision is required.

Chocolate
I prefer to use chocolate wafers designed for home molding chocolate. My preferred brand is Merckens which works well with all chocolate molding projects and tastes great.

Melting Chocolate
For a small project like this either melting method may be used, however I always prefer and recommend using the double boiler method. I find it much easier to get good results using a double boiler.

Double Boiler

See my detailed step by step Double Boiler Usage Instructions.

Microwave

A microwave may also be used but care must be taken not to overheat the chocolate.

  1. Place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Heat for 30 seconds.
  3. Remove and stir.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the chocolate is creamy.
  5. Check to make sure the temperature is no higher than 160 degrees F. before pouring. Pouring chocolate molds hotter than this will destroy the mold. Do not place the thermometer in the microwave!

Step By Step Instructions

1. I find that the Merckens wafers work best and taste great. 2. Stirring after 30 seconds in the microwave.
3. Once the chocolate has melted to a creamy consistency spoon it into the mold cavities. 4. Tap the mold against the counter several times, position the sticks, then spin them with your finger to ensure full coverage.
5. This piece was removed from the mold too soon - note the discolored areas. The mold should be placed in a freezer until the chocolates fall out with a slight flex of the mold. 6. Reheat some chocolate and place a dab on the back of a sugar embellishment.
7. Position it on the lolly and gently press in place. 8. Repeating step 6 with a sugar heart.
9. Finished bear with heart. 10. Due to the small size of these bear's eyes, adding candy eyes would make them look bug eyed so we are leaving them as is.
Wrapping
1. Place in a 3" x 4" bag. 2. Wrap with a heart twist tie.
