Taper Candle Dipping Frame
Instructions
Dipping tapers is far more productive than molding them. Although the
initial setup cost is somewhat higher, dipping can provide dozens of tapers
per hour. Molding on the other hand will provide one candle per mold every
one to two hours.
Frame Preparation
- Use thumb screws to set the height of the adjustable arms (align the
arms) - note that for a 12" candle it will need to be set larger
than 12" apart. Add Approximately 2".
- Tie the wick to a lower arm.
- Wind wick onto frame, going straight up, over one arm, straight down,
over one arm, etc... keeping the slack out.
- When you reach the final arm tie off the wick while maintaining tension on it.
- Trim excess wick.
- Prepare all the frames in this manner.
Basic Setup
- Make some type of hanging setup for the frames. This may be a suspended
pipe, a board with hooks, etc. It is best to have some way to hang these
after each dip.
- For best results use 6 to 12 frames.
- Hold one frame by hook, extend arm straight out. The bottom of the
frame is the maximum height the top of your dipping vat should be positioned.
Placing the vat higher will rapidly exhaust you.
Basic Procedure
- Dip the frames one at a time then hang. The first dip should be held
in the wax until wick stops bubbling.
- By the time you dip the last frame, the first should be ready for its next dip.
- Repeat until the desired thickness is obtained.
- Allow to cool.
- Cut candles from frames. They may be left in pairs or cut apart.
- To remove excess wax on the frames heat the dipping vat to 190 degrees or so. Place the frames inside until the wax melts.
