Floating Candle Fills With Water
Problem Troubleshooting Guide

If you make a lot of floating candles sooner or later you will encounter some that seem to fill with water prematurely.

Water Seeps Into Floating Candles
This problem is actually fairly common. It is caused by the fact that wick can wick up water about as easily as it can wick up wax.

Prevention - Use the technique that applies to your candles:

"Top Up" Molds
Molds that use a tabbed wick is inserted from the top, such as standard metal floater molds.

Allow the bottom of the mold to get cloudy (this happens as it cools) before dropping in the wick.

This provides a thin layer of wax below the wick, preventing contact with the water.

"Top Down" Molds
Molds that have a wick hole, such as our silicone and latex floater molds.

  1. Prime the wick before use.
  2. After first pour hardens, trim the wick to below the surface.
  3. Make a second pour.
  4. After removing from the mold, level the base on a heated pan or electric griddle.

This provides a thin layer of wax below the wick, preventing contact with the water.
