Candle Mold Removal Problem
Troubleshooting Guide
This is a guide for removing stuck molds as well as tips
for preventing future problems with mold removal.
Removing Stuck Molds
In general, candles shrink as they cool so de molding should not pose
a frequent problem. Under no circumstances should you try to pry or
cut the wax from the mold. If you encounter the occasional stuck
mold follow this procedure:
- Make sure the wax is fully cooled - removing a candle too soon is
much more difficult and usually ruins the candle.
- Place the mold in a refrigerator until it is cold to the touch - if
the candle is not still warm this should take about 30 minutes.
- The candle should now come out of the mold quite easily. If not, continue
to step 4.
- Place the mold in a freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove the candle.
- If it doesn't come out, repeat steps 4 and 5 several times.
- If all else fails, the wax can be melted out of the mold using the
following steps. This is not recommended or necessary for plastic molds.
- Preheat an oven to 150 degrees F.
- Place the mold on its side in a pan (to catch the melting wax).
- It is a good idea to shut the oven off at this stage.
- Place the pan in the oven.
- Leave until the wax melts out of the mold.
- Thoroughly check the mold. Mold that exhibit extreme removal difficulty
are usually damaged.
Damaged Molds
When inspecting molds for damage, look for dents, scratches (inside),
or being bent out of shape. Most damaged molds will no longer be usable
for candle making.
Mold Release
We recommend a light application of silicone mold release on all metal
molds before pouring candles. Applying a coat inside and out before storing
will also help prevent rust.
