Candle Wrong Color Problem
Troubleshooting Guide

This is more of a misunderstanding beginning candle makers have than an actual problem.

Expected A Different Color
Dyed candle wax lightens in color as it hardens. Do not expect the wax color in the melting / pouring pot to match the finished candle. Candle dyes are transparent. Because of this they rely on the light reflecting off the depths of the wax to deepen the color. Since the melted wax is transparent, light can reflect off more depth providing a deeper color in the pot. This does not affect gel wax as it is transparent.

Prevention - When making candles it is necessary to test the color before pouring to ensure it is the color desired. A simple way is to place a drop on a sheet of plain white paper. Although quick and simple this is not overly accurate and will only give you an approximation of the finished color. A much better method is as follows:

  1. Scoop up some wax in a standard floater mold to a depth of approximately 1/8 inch.
  2. Place the mold in a freezer for five minutes.
  3. Remove from the freezer to see the color your candle will be if you pour now.
  4. The test wax can be removed from the mold and put back into the pouring pot.
