Winter Olympics 2010
Although I don’t usually have any desire to watch televised sports, through my entire life I have felt compelled to watch the winter olympics - until now.
It started the way it usually does - sitting down to cheer on our athletes as they compete. This quickly turned into dissappointment, then outright disgust as I wondered whose idea it was to televise several hours of commercials with a few minutes of sports sprinkled in here and there - almost as a teaser.
I honestly wonder who has the patience to actually sit through all this, I know I don’t.
I suspect that there are millions of DVR’s getting a workout this week and that of course just wastes all those advertiser’s dollars since a major portion of the viewers will just fast forward through the commercials - so what was gained by having more advertising than program?
The Olympic committee should give some serious thought to setting some guidelines for this sort of thing before awarding media contracts as ultimately this could impact the Olympic games themselves.
